I know what you are thinking: having your portrait taken by a professional photographer is a bit like going to the dentist: you know you need to do it but you’d really rather not. Well, it doesn’t have to be that way.
As a portrait photographer, it’s my role to capture the lovely character and quirks of every person I photograph. How do I do that? By making our portrait session friendly and engaging. I love meeting people and having a good chat, and through these conversations I’ll see that brilliant, unique spark of you that we need to photograph.
It’ll be fun, I promise - and you will love the outcome.
Whatever type of portrait you want, they all start in the same way, with a conversation.
This is so you can give me a bit of background and I can get to know you. Good portrait photography is about lighting and composition. Excellent portrait photography is about understanding your subject.
So we’ll meet, over Zoom or over a cuppa, and discuss your session. This will cover everything from location to timings to clothes to any accessibility planning to wet-weather contingency (this is Cornwall after all!).
On the day of the session, the main thing is to enjoy yourself. We’ll have a laugh, share some stories, maybe have more coffee…. After all, how often do you get to spend time mainly focusing on you?
After the photoshoot, I’ll prepare the images and have a gallery of your portraits ready, usually within two or three working days.
I’ll also send you a link to my trusted printer, The Print Space [link], so you can decide if you’d like to order any printed copies. They’re a great reliable company, whose eco-friendly ethos matches my own.
One of the best decisions we made on the St Petroc’s People Project was to invite Gavan to be the photographer. The compassion and the beauty of each image made them the talking point of the project.

This initial chat is one of the most important parts of the portrait process, and I always meet with my clients so I can get to know them better. We can chat by phone or Zoom, and if you’re in Cornwall, we can meet over a coffee (always a nice option).
This is up to you. You can choose your favourite location(s), or I can make suggestions that I think would be right for you. We can also meet in St Ives, at my studio or in your workplace.
As Portraits in Cornwall is all about the landscape, the weather does make a difference. Having said that, it doesn’t have to be sunny to create a wonderful portrait. I can take your portrait in just about any conditions, apart from heavy rain when we would reschedule the session. We’d discuss all this during the consultation.
Yes I do. Please get in touch to discuss group portraits.
This depends on the package you choose, so it can be anything between one and four hours. But it’s more than just a photography session: it's a lot of fun, with plenty of stories and laughter, and a real life-affirming, uplifting feel to it.
As our name suggests, I cover “Portraits in Cornwall” , and I’ll travel to any location in Cornwall to take your portrait. Saying that, if you’re based outside Cornwall, we can discuss travel options.
I like to work on the edit the day of the shoot or at least the following day. This means I will usually have a gallery of your portraits ready within a couple of working days of the shoot.
I’ll create a dedicated gallery of your portraits for you. This will also link to a print shop, giving you the option of a print or wall art of your portrait.
